AK mags, runs on direct impingement, and will reliably eat anything you feed it. Left overs get tossed in the bin, and I fill the mags, and it is good to go. SIG will throw those heavier loadings that are available. Tapco with a nasty note. If a guy wants an entire rifle that uses AK mags, get a SIG 556R. It too now has an enhanced ALG trigger and a Williams peep rear sight and yep I use a Midwest scope rail that attaches perfectly to the side mount on my newest Arsenal. There are wide variations in the performance of surplus ammo. AK variant would me a great seller around the world if it accepted traditional tried and true eastern Block, steel spined AK47 magazines. Consider the limitations of the round. No hiccups, just a lot of fun. Just got in a 1000 rounds of Russian made Tiger that, if you can believe the hype, is supposed to be the primo Russian ammo.
AR with the stock all the way in. The rifle is heavy. This was a good article but, there is one thing lacking from it. But this is an AR of sorts so most of the controls will be pretty familiar. The biggest appeal of the Mutant is its massive bolt, its drawback is the common practice now of companies going away from chrome lined barrels as a money saving trick during the manufacturing process. To each his own though.
The AR platform has much tighter tolerances than most AKs. The Mutant and Mutant pistol. Tula has a 1 ground hog MOA at 100 meters. Goggles might prevent it, or one of those blast suits the bomb squad wears when they work on detonating suspicious suitcases at the airport. Not a good combination. Mutant and love it. Chrome is VERY hard and when properly applied will last forever with any kind of decent care and possibly without any. AR platform shooters tend to value rather highly. Fired same amount of same ammo brands through my 556 ARs with same result. No issues what so ever except the jealously of a few friends haha sounds like a lot of the talk on here. Not on your life Buddy. Belloit ammo, into a 2 inch group and my eye never had to leave the scope. Yet the gun is built like a Soviet tank. Or just waste you money! That and having cataracts these days, regretfully, the benefit of the much improved accuracy is wasted on me. And the pistol feels much more robust than the typical AR pistol. Take it off, put it back and it will stay zeroed. The charging handle, safety, trigger, even the furniture are analogous.
What happens when you fire it from the hip? The SBN is Salt Bath Nitriding, a method of coating the gun that will ensure solid protection for a life of hard use. It would be an interesting comparison. While this is part of what makes the rifle stable and not difficult to shoot, it also makes this a beast of a rifle to carry around for any prolonged period of time. One thing I have to wonder if you really thought through. Still if I want to hit something, I choose the AR. You might consider running a comparison between this and the Czech vzor58. The Mutant and the new pistol version. WASR 10 would be a better option and much cheaper than this thing!
FTEs or FTFs, and runs like a dream using ASC magazines. SKS or an AK, you will be happier in the long run and it will shoot just as far and just as accurate as this new rifle will. Dave, but I was disappointed by most of your article. If they come with a cheek riser I would buy at least one, especially if they made one that folded to the side as well. Is the Mutant cool? The rifle is rock solid, heavy, and accurate. AK, I should include some of the negatives. The appeal is logical enough: Americans love AR platform rifles. NOTHING but steel ammo and after at LEAST 2000 rounds, I have NEVER had a SINGLE malfunction, EVER!
AK round is inherently inaccurate but the platform you shoot it from may be. All of the others have been eliminated because of magazine issues. You talked about the reliability but, what about mission related reliability. Mutant for a long range gun. The Tapco 20 round is the lone exception. Because of that, you will be able to run this gun a long time before you need replacement parts. Burris, repeat shots were incredibly fast. Not to be confused with the shotgun fudd crowd from commie states who believe that folks should only have shotguns.
These guns are selling for prices that reflect the quality of workmanship and materials. Light firing pin strikes is the fault of the rifle, NOT the ammo. Sonny, As a former Marine myself I say Semper Fi brother! There are more and more options for accurate hunting loads and self defense. EVERY BIT as effective at the ranges necessary to be considered an effective battle round! AK variants that I have collected over the years. Armed Forces STILL demand chrome lined barrels and believe me, this time the military has one thing right. Nothing brings out the ak owners butt hurt like a ar style rifle chambered for the x39. When you do they will be more complicated to find than AK parts.
SKS, and another fifty bucks or so converting it to magazine feed, including the two 30 round mags. Hands down the AR is the better. And it was over 100 degrees on the day of the shoot, so my brain was slowly melting. AR is a distance rifle, they are seriously fooling only themselves. As a pistol, it is big, heavy, and a bit cumbersome. Now all they need to do is to provide our troops with a field rifle that shoots a drop em where they stand round instead of the gopher caliber that the old Stoner design is still stuck with. Ohhh the x39 accurate to 1000 yards bla bla.
The price of the bottom end of the bulk ammo makes stockpiling not difficult. And that will make the price a bit easier to handle. There were a couple of hiccups, typical to the round. Pretty much a copy of the Swiss STG 90 that uses AK mags. CMMG seems to have taken the worst of both worlds, jammed them together into a single rifle, and demanded we pay a rather outrageous price for the privilege of owning an inferior weapon. Mutant seems an appropriate name, as if CMMG were very aware of the odd peculiarities of this gun.
Most gun shops in my area are after the fudd crowd, which are still butt hurt about anything not bolt or lever action. Shooting in this manner puts your face above the fireball, and the gases, which are surprisingly viscous, are then aligned with your eyeballs. SGN, I bought mine for half that thru pure luck and have never regretted it, today they are a bit cheaper, why? Remember that it is Geissele that makes the ALG trigger and they have earned their reputation at least with the AK. That is a personal question. AR frame is like putting a VW eng in a BMW, why bother? And then the resulting gun would be ideal. The Mutant is now at the top of my list, for sure. Are you sure you are calling the right number?
Im sure some will. The Mutants ate all of it. AR will do it, but I have a wonderful 308 HB for that kind of shooting. In short, if you know how to run an AR, and want a more affordable gun to run, this is the one. Arsenal made rifle and my history with them goes back to when they were Arsenal Bulgaria rifles and were imported by more than one importer. BUT, we must concentrate more on distances of 300 yards or LESS, because THAT is where we fight! But it is present, and it is brutal. In the end, this gun is going to sing a siren song to some shooters.
People who are hating on this rifle without ever handling or shooting one have no idea what they are talking about. THAT is an not difficult and inexpensive fix by simply buying a drop in replacement Williams peep sight and a few different sized aperatures. NOTHING close to your findings. And so CMMG, a company that specializes in ARs, has crossed new territory with the Mutant. CMMG is good about packaging parts kits. As for direct comparisons to the AK, the list is small.
For me, I see no need for it. The ONE constant is the SUPERB Bulgarian milled receiver and the outstanding Steyr CHF chrome lined barrels that simply do NOT wear out. The pistol, obviously, lacks the stability provided by a stock, but I can still hold it out one handed and consistently hit a torso sized target. Before we move forward with the review, I feel it is my responsibility to issue a public service announcement. The pistol has a sling plate for a hook sling. M16A1 soured me on the AR platform and with the price, it gives me more appreciation for the AK. STG 90 buttstock, see how stupid using it as a pistol is and then fold it back out and have a rifle instead of a worthless night time pyrotechnic device no one will buy from you. Yes they were dirty after 1K rounds each of Russian ammo, but everything ran just fine. You can drive any nail with the right hammer!
More companies seem to be making them. On the move, the lighted reticle makes moving and shooting fluid and effective. AR platform rifle has seen a lot of twists and turns. Just my 2 cents worth. At the very least, it is time to buy a couple of cases of Tula, and as many varieties of the good stuff as I can get. AK made that will out group my scoped Marlin or Winchesters. Both have won because both do some things well and others not so much. Thats the end of my spill let the flamming begin. AR either though, my choice would be an m40 or a higher end civilian rifle such as r700 or a savage tactical in 7mm mag or 300 short mag Although shot mag ammo comes with a pretty hefty price nowadays. Minute of Angle at 100 Meters. AK is, is that the recoil forces extra tension on the receiver and accuracy suffers. The main reason it is said to be so inaccurate is because of the recoil incured during full auto fire which is tremendous compared to the straight back stock designs of more modern weapons. When this is more than likely far from reality.
No fancy way around it. In modern combat the outermost distance MOST engagements occur at is 300 yards. Probably so unless you live in the desert or in the middle of nowhere in some fictitious grassy plain with no hills. However on the other hand. The only down side is that the 54 kicks a good bit. Consider it an option. It was designed to be very not difficult maintained, run in all conditions, and shoot from here to there, on automatic fire, reliably.
Take a look out your window, can you see past 300 yards? Additionally, I am not limited to FMJ ammo, and in a SHTF situation my goal will be to kill, not wound. Now, go out to 200 or 300 yards, and you have a round that ballistically, just inferior to many other options out there. The Dragonuv SVD is NOT a sub moa weapon. If you want a bullet that size, go big or stay home. It hits hard, and it hits with the poop to put someone on their butt.
FN FAL in that category. How would they be posing a threat to you? It will be less expensive to purchase and simpler to maintain. We work hard to bring the best Firearms Forum! In all of these forums everyone acts like if the SHTF they are gonna turn into the next Mikhail Surkov. My purpose: Prepare for the revolt, target practice fun. AR platform, go for it. Just what I was looking for. You do not need a sniper rifle in just about any self defence scenario. Russian super technology cartridge to get the job done. The AK platform is great, for what it was designed to do. MOA all day long with off the shelf ammuntion?
However in semi auto fire it is plenty accurate enough for anything within 300 yards. Not in the right hands, not on a good day, not with a Leprechaun in your pocket. You have a 24 inch barrel that is not free floated. The problem I have with the AK platform is that should End of Days happen, and it NOT involve the Chinese Red Army, the ammo is going to dry up pretty damn quick. AK any day of the week. Would you honestly be able to shoot someone from 6 or 7 or 8 hundred yards away? Here is my 2 Cents.
They are every bit as good as the C Products magazine. If you put 30rounds on 1to 4 rounds had a tilted the round and jammed. The issue is not with the ASC mags. No problem with feeding and no modifications to the mag. After hearing about problems with these mags I did some checking. No failures for 100 rounds what more can I ask? About the best price you can find here at PA also. Anderson stripped lowers and J and J Precision Arms lower.
All rounds fired fine with one misfire where the primer had a nice indentation from the firing pin but the round did not fire. AR check your feed ramps. Sometimes the gas systems can be troublesome, causing FTE problems. The magazine springs are robust. If you look at the photos there are two ribs on the sides and two dimples inside the curved parts on top. Fiocchi and Winchester brass ammo and Hornady, Tul, Brown, Silver Bear, and Wolf steel case ammo in different configurations. This batch seems to fit much tighter in the mag well, but fed fine when manually fed into the chamber. You have to go in there with a rotary tool like a dremel to clean the bumps up to get reliable operation. When my firing pin was changed out with a more conventional sort there were problems with every magazine.
Went to the range and put about 225 rds thru. ASC makes the only mags that are consistent and will actually feed every time. They all shoot right. Ordered two more and they perform as well as any standard Ar15 magazine. Those areas catch on the rim of the brass can will cause cycling problems. It took more effort to get the gun broken in and adjusted than your average AR but these mags have not failed me yet. Mags worked exactly as promised. The spring is not strong enough to keep the round in the right position. It would be difficult for the springs to be both simultaneously weak and the magazine be difficult to load as some reviews suggest.
Tried it a second time with the same result.
